Book Review: Little Women by Louise May Alcott

This is a classical novel. Finally right? This is one of the few classic novels that I have read and love, and understand that I’m not a huge fan of real life issues. This book centers around 4 sisters living in a time of war and poverty. There is love, adventure, family, fear, and death in this book. It doesn’t look like much but once you get into it, you can’t help but fall in love and feel for these sisters.

A small hint of a spoiler if you have not read this book…

Don’t get close to Beth. Or try not to.

The four sisters are: Tomboy Jo, Motherly Meg, Gentle Beth and Delicate Amy. You get the chance to follow them from children to adulthood, where each learn in there own way that family never breaks apart and it’s the one thing you need when everything is going dark.

For those of you who don’t know. This book is also a movie and I can tell you that the movie is just as good as the book. ❤

Book Review: The Iron King By Julie Kagawa

I’m not even going to explain where I have been this time. Just trust me when I say, I had a good reason to not be around and even though I’m not feeling better, I’m here. I’ve read a ton of books since my last post. So let me get started with the first one.

When I started reading this book, I had no idea what it would be about besides fairies. And my god. It was great! I read this in pretty much one day. It was amazing. The story line is great, the characters are amazing, the plot is fantastic and keeps you at the edge of your seat. It was amazing. There’s not much I can say about this book without giving it away entirely.

This book gives you twists like no tomorrow and you fall in love with each character no matter how bad they are and how wrong they are. They become people you know and what to keep knowing. The confused and afraid Meghan, The Icy Ash, Playful and Daring Puck, Mysterious Grimalkin… And much more. 

I literally cannot stop raving about this book, I know that they fifth book was just released and I can guarantee that I’ll be buying and reading them all. ❤

Advice??? Or Just Hear Me Rant

I haven’t had a long angry rant in a while. Just recently my boss came in to attempt to make me sign a write up slip. Which no. I didn’t sign. And I’m not going to.

For those of you who don’t know, I work at an animal hospital and I basically babysit the pets. My shift ends at 6pm and the following shift does not start until 6am. Meaning dogs are alone for 12 hours to sleep. It’s a ritual that I give everyone water before I leave so that they won’t go thirsty. That day we had a dog that is well known for drink water as quickly as she breathes air. That night, I did my usual. Gave everyone water and left for the night.

My boss came in today and told me that Thursday morning (the morning after my Wednesday evening shift) the dog had no water what so ever. I told her that unfortunately that dog is known for drinking a lot and I did fill her bowl up before I left. She says it still made no sense how the dogs water bowl was empty. I told her that the dog must have been thirsty, since it is not unusual that we open and see that nothing is there the next morning. I told her that we leave at 6pm. The next person does not arrive until 6am. That’s 12 hours of no one around. And big dogs are usually the first to be attended to. So small dogs are last. At this she said that she was with small dogs at 7:30am. Which I told her was 13 1/2 hours, plenty of time for the dog to have drank all the water. She told me that the dog still had water on Friday night when a different employee closed. I responded by telling her that we can’t make judgments on how a body works, because some dogs can be more thirsty and hungry one day and the next they are not. So her argument still doesn’t tell me how this was my fault. I told her the only way this could have been my fault is that I failed to give the dog a different bowl. But I didn’t since we never do and we almost always get the same results. 

In the end, I didn’t sign my write up. And I’m not going to. She said I can’t always explain my way out of things. I normally don’t argue my way out of things and I have no problem signing a write up if I truly made a mistake. I just find it hard to believe that this was something that was my fault. I know what I did and how I did it. I never in 3 years have had a problem with giving a pet water. I have to talk to my manager Tuesday about this. My manager does not truly like me. So I know she will not even hear my case. I know Tuesday will be the day that I am left without a job. Because I will be quitting. I will not be signing that write up.

Am I wrong? Is this really my fault? I really don’t know if what I’m doing is the right thing. But I feel like it is.

Book Review: City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

This book, in my opinion, was better than the first. There was a lot more going on, less fillers, more drama, more tears. More everything! And every character found a way to develop a little more from the last book. Jace seems to be less arrogant and you can see more of his vulnerability, Simon grows a freaking backbone and though he loves Clary, he doesn’t let that stop him most of the time. He even bonds, after a long while, with Jace. Isabella is as feisty as ever but you can see her love for her brothers clearer in this sequel, Luke is more of a father than he ever was in the first one and you get to know a lot about him here, Magnus is as fabulous as always and you see his dedication to Alec. Alec is still a bonehead. But you can see that he is opening up to Magnus. And Clary… Oh Clary. I was barely able to stand her in the first book and by the end of the second book I positively hated her.

There isn’t really much I can say about this book without spoiling it! Just believe me when I say that it’s a lot better than the first book. And you meet a ton of awesome characters and you read things that you never thought were possible. And the best part… MALEC!!!! Duh. Lol.

I rated this book a solid 5! It was just amazing!

Book Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

First of all, let me say, I’ve been sick with depression. Which explains my absence. Since I’ve been away from here, I’ve been reading my little heart away. I have currently finished two books but I think I’ll write about one today and one tomorrow. Lol.

Has anyone heard about this book??? I bet you have because right now it’s very popular in the YA section. So I was excited to read this book. I had heard so much about it. I heard that it was full of adventure, action, love, female empowerment, etc. Nothing but good things. So I bought the book the moment I saw it.

I was sorely disappointed.

Celaena’s character in my option was very flawed. Instead of this strong female assassin, who’s name brings fear to those around her. I get a woman who has a big talk, that she rarely backs up and who is so emotional that all I see is her being submissive and meek. Her head is not in the situation at hand. It is in her love life. She almost is like a scared rabbit. I understand that she’s female and she’s human. But if we can have a male assassin who is cold, strong, deadly and more like an animal, then why can’t a woman be like that? It doesn’t sound like female empowerment to me. I was so disappointed in her character and I can’t imagine why I was excited to read this book.

Dorian was just as annoying. But at the very least he had a solid character. Though he was spoiled and pushed his way into a relationship with Celaena, it was ultimately Celaena’s fault for the ways she felt. The only things she did right was to end it with him. And that is all that I can applaud her for.

Chaol… Oh this character was amazing. I loved him to bits. He broke my heart in many ways. I felt that though he was in love with Celaena, he did not let it cloud his judgement and he was always cautious about the troubles near by. I felt like he never forgot what was going on and what his job was. And though he was in heartbreak, he made sure to keep an eye on murders and on trying to get Celaena to do what she had to.

Over all, though this book was interesting enough to finish, it was not as good as every raved about and it just left me disappointed even though I enjoyed some parts of the book. I rated it a 3 for it’s lame characters and even lamer ending.

If I do not read the book I select then I must get rid of it and so there will be no review for those and those do not count for my 100 book reading challenge. (For those of you who have not kept up with me, I have read 11 books so far this year and have reviewed them in earlier posts.)

I will also be adding books to my TBR Shelf and I will make sure to make a haul/unhaul blog at the end of each month to let you know what has been added and what has been taken out. I will also be continuing to review books as I finish them.
